What is the story?

Balanchine's revamped story follows heroine Marie Stahlbaum on Christmas eve. At her family's Yuletide celebrations, Marie is gifted a special toy nutcracker by her enigmatic uncle Herr Drosselmeier. After the party, at the stroke of midnight, the gift comes to life and Marie and her Nutcracker prince are transported to the realm of the Sugar Plum fairy and the fearsome Mouse King...
