STELLAR PERFORMANCE

5/5
Robert Sanders from Birmingham, Alabama
27th October 2017

These guys cash their checks. They might be earning "money for nothing, and their checks for free" but by golly they put their backs into it. Dave Grohl is livin the dream and the other guys for the most part appear to have enough energy to enjoy themselves well enough. Grohl can live or die by the audience. Or, he can live and die with subtle cutting remarks to spank that rear to get motivated to ENJOY SOME ROCK AND ROLL! Grohl voice was a bit shaky on the first few tunes; working his energy up to absolutely lay it on our noses halfway into the set. The first tunes were their newest hits and they actually were decent but Grohl obliterated his timid audience into a state of euphoric bliss when the Foo's started cranking out their slightly less recent material. These guys have had years to pound these tunes out from radio drivel to moments of pure joy as he and the group chug out an audience appreciation moment. Grohl can be so fun and clear this guy an absolute showman.

Once Grohl voice warmed up from shrieking was radio spot on. These guys really need to do WKEXP sometime. Cohesion among the group was solid, the sound shook our very bodies and he poured himself out on stage going so far as to break a string in a duet with Peter Searcy. The opening act the Struts were not quite so much my thing but they really warmed the crowd up with a saucy performance from an Irish(?) frontman that led in the Spirit of the Foo's for feeling us out with crowd interaction. The guitarist had some licks that, though familiar, still manage to come out of left field. Of course, all vocals are hard to hear in the BJCC. Impactful but on the muddy side. Perhaps highlight of the night was "Big Me", "The Pretender", and "Learn to Fly". "Sunday Rain" I believe is a Hawkins song. But this guy has an inner Ringo Starr in him because he pulled out all the stops on this tune. Masterful technician of a drummer and had me mesermized and shaken in my seat at time.

Grohl apologized for a family emergency that had prevented him from performing in Kentucky. But he is a gentleman about it for the most part, promising to even return to Birmingham on future album tours. Shifflets (?) lead the charge and Smear's affinity for hard and fast punk giving a different dynamic to Shifflets preachy lead runs and Grohls twangy swang. Pricey tickets but the guy has an uncanny ability to get his voice in better shape from screaming with enviable endurance. Good job guys and God bless you on your way! Thanks Struts! That guitarist and bassist clearly having fun.

I've been attending shows for 40yrs and this was among the BEST. THREE hrs of great music and entertainment. Dave is hilarious. Loved when he brought Jeremy up from the audience to play guitar on Big Me. Cannot WAIT to see them again! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
